Apple announced HomePod mini 2 on October 13, a new version of its smallest smart speaker with the Apple S10 chip, five colors (pink, green, blue, white, and midnight), and closer ties to Apple TV and the Mac. Preorders opened the same day, and the speaker reaches stores on Friday, October 30. Apple’s new Siri AI is coming to HomePod mini 2 too, but not at launch: it arrives in a future free software update.

Design, Colors, and Audio Upgrades

HomePod mini 2 has a compact footprint and comes in five colors. It delivers room-filling 360-degree sound and can be set up as a single speaker, in a stereo pair, or as part of a multiroom audio system across the home.

Inside, the big change is Apple’s S10 chip, which runs what the company calls computational audio. The speaker analyzes music in real time to tune loudness, acoustic performance, and the range between quiet and loud passages as tracks play.

Siri AI Coming Later, With Personal Context

Once the update lands, Siri AI will bring broader world knowledge to the speaker, pulling up-to-date answers from the web and handling more natural back-and-forth conversations. Apple also says Siri AI will improve how you find new music.

Siri AI will first be available in English in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, and South Africa.

Paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, Siri AI on HomePod mini 2 will be able to tap into personal context. Apple’s examples include finding a song a friend recommended in a text, setting a reminder tied to a calendar event or location, locating a recipe from an email, and adding ingredients to a grocery list. The speaker can recognize up to six people in a household by voice and connect each one to their own device for apps like Messages and timers.

There is a catch: Siri AI requires the owner of the home in the Home app to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with Siri AI turned on. Once it is enabled on the speaker, other people in the home get the world knowledge, natural conversations, and better help finding music even without one of those devices. Apple says Siri requests on HomePod mini 2 are processed either on-device or through its Private Cloud Compute system.

Home Theater with Apple TV and Default Audio for Mac

For the first time, four HomePod mini 2 speakers can pair with the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) for surround sound, arranged in matching front and rear pairs. HomePod (2nd generation) speakers also work in the setup, as long as each pair matches. The speakers and Apple TV recognize where each speaker sits in the room and calibrate audio timing and levels automatically. The new Apple TV 4K arrives on November 13, two weeks after HomePod mini 2.

Beyond the living room, HomePod mini 2 can act as the default speaker for any Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later, handling everything from movies and gaming to FaceTime and video calls. It works with a single speaker or a stereo pair.

Sound Glow and Ambient Soundscapes

HomePod mini 2 adds a visual feature Apple calls Sound Glow. The top of the speaker becomes a canvas that glows and pulses in sync with music, reacting to bass and treble in real time. The light is color-matched to the album artwork in Now Playing, so each song gets its own look.

Users can also pick a soundscape like rain, which triggers its own animations for a calmer atmosphere.

Smart Home Hub and Security Features

HomePod mini 2 functions as a home hub for Apple’s smart home platform, so users can control compatible accessories from the Home app on iPhone whether they are at home or away. By voice, they can lock the front door, close the garage, lower the blinds, adjust the thermostat, or turn off the lights, and the Home app handles automations and scenes that control several accessories at once.

Sound Recognition listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and, if it detects one, sends a notification to your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It requires the updated Home architecture in the Home app, with every Apple device in the home running the latest software. Apple says the feature should not be relied on in emergencies or other high-risk situations.

Through the Home app, users can also “check in” on the house by listening and talking to someone at home through the speaker. HomePod mini 2 works with Apple’s new Apple Home Collection video doorbells and cameras, made with LG, which start arriving in December, with select accessories following in early 2027. With Face Recognition turned on in HomeKit Secure Video, the speaker can announce who is at the door.

Availability

Preorders for HomePod mini 2 opened October 13 at apple.com/store and in the Apple Store app in the U.S. and more than 23 other countries and regions, with in-store availability beginning Friday, October 30. HomePod mini 2 is compatible with HomePod software 27.2.
