Open-Ear Noise Cancelling That Keeps Your Ear Unsealed
Active Noise Cancellation in an open-ear bud is hard to pull off because outside sound can leak freely into the ear instead of being blocked by a tight seal. AirPods 5 keep the classic shape that rests in the ear and leaves the canal open, but Apple says a new multiport acoustic architecture and updated computational audio are what make the new system work. According to the company, this design removes up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Apple calls the Active Noise Cancellation on AirPods 5 the industry’s best in an open-ear design. The multiport acoustic architecture is built to manage how sound from the outside world reaches your ear, while the earbuds’ microphones and processing handle the rest. The body of the earbud routes outside sound away from the canal, and smarter algorithms cancel what still gets through, so the system works even though your ear canal is never sealed. The company says voices and nearby sounds come through more naturally, so you can keep your earbuds in while walking around or talking to someone without things sounding artificial or harsh.
Adaptive Audio returns as well, blending Transparency mode and Active Noise Cancellation on the fly. The earbuds adjust how much outside sound they let in based on what is going on around you, like lowering noise from a sudden loud environment or opening up more when things are calm. Conversation Awareness adds another layer by dropping media volume when you start talking. Siri AI, Gestures, and Live Translation With Apple Intelligence
AirPods 5 gain a set of smarter features when paired with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. Siri AI, which is rolling out in beta with iOS 27, is designed to understand more personal context across your messages, emails, photos, and apps, along with broad world knowledge. That means you can ask Siri to “play the song a friend recommended in a message” and have it find the track, or ask it to “navigate to a dinner reservation from a confirmation buried in an email” and have it find the right place. These abilities depend on Apple Intelligence on the iPhone, not on the earbuds alone.
Siri Interactions, which Apple already ships on earlier AirPods, let you respond to Siri silently using head movements. You can nod your head to signal “yes” or shake it to say “no,” which gives you a way to respond when you do not want to speak out loud. AirPods 5 also tie into Live Translation, which is powered by Apple Intelligence on the iPhone. You can start Live Translation by pressing both stems at once, saying “Siri, start Live Translation,” or using the Action button on the iPhone, and Apple says the capability now reaches the entire AirPods lineup, though its own support documentation currently lists Live Translation as working with a narrower set of models.
The next generation of Apple Intelligence arrives with iOS 27 on Monday, September 14, 2026, and Siri AI will be a beta feature that day for users with a supported device set to English. Support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish is planned for October 2026. All of these software-driven features depend on having an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone paired with the AirPods, so the earbuds are one piece of a larger setup. The Wireless Charging Case is flexible on charging, working with Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers, and USB-C, so it fits into more charging setups you might already have.
Both AirPods 5 models feature better resistance to dust, sweat, and water compared with earlier versions. That should make them a safer pick for workouts, commutes in bad weather, or just daily wear without worrying as much about exposure. On the environmental side, Apple says AirPods 5 are made with 40 percent recycled material overall, including 70 percent recycled plastic in the wireless charging case and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery. The company also says manufacturing uses 35 percent renewable energy across the supply chain for this product.

Apple opened pre-orders for both AirPods 5 models in the United States and more than 65 other countries and regions on September 9, 2026. Store availability begins Friday, September 18, 2026.
