Amazon is rolling out a new Echo Dot that adds a built-in smart home hub for Zigbee, Matter, and Thread, along with a new Echo Studio with Home Camera, a camera-equipped version of Amazon’s Echo Studio speaker. Amazon says both ship starting today, and both are designed to work with Alexa+, which Amazon says is included with a Prime membership. The Echo Dot focuses on smarter controls and stronger sound in a small speaker, while the Echo Studio with Home Camera brings together higher-end audio and a new way for Alexa to understand what its camera sees.
Echo Dot Adds a Built-In Smart Home Hub
The new Echo Dot includes a smart home hub inside the speaker for the first time, so it can connect to compatible Zigbee, Matter, and Thread devices right out of the box without a separate hub. That means the Echo Dot becomes the central controller for many lights, plugs, switches, sensors, and other supported gadgets in the home. Amazon says the hub support is built directly into the device, so the setup stays inside the speaker instead of needing extra boxes or bridges.
The Echo Dot also acts as a built-in eero Wi-Fi extender for people who already use an eero network. According to Amazon, it can add up to 1,000 square feet of extra coverage to an existing eero setup. This turns the Dot into both a smart speaker and a Wi-Fi accessory for those systems, reducing dead zones for homes built around eero.
On-Device Alexa+, New Mics, and Sensor Fusion
Inside the new Echo Dot is AZ3, Amazon’s custom silicon, which powers on-device processing with Alexa+. Amazon says this on-device processing is meant to make conversations with Alexa+ faster and more natural. Amazon’s announcement does not say which requests, if any, are handled without the cloud.
A fourth microphone has been added so Alexa can hear you more reliably as you move around the room. The Echo Dot also supports Voice ID, which can recognize who is speaking and personalize responses based on the person’s profile. To better react to its surroundings, the speaker uses what Amazon calls Omnisense sensor fusion to detect room temperature and presence. With that, Alexa can turn up the thermostat when the room is cold or turn on compatible lights as you walk in, using the information from the sensors to trigger actions.
Sound, Design, and Kids Versions
The new Echo Dot is built around a full-range driver that Amazon says delivers 50% more bass than the last generation. That upgrade is aimed at giving the small speaker a deeper and fuller sound while keeping the same compact form factor. The device is wrapped in 3D knit fabric and comes in Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green, and Coral Pink. An optional stand is available separately for people who want to change how or where the speaker sits in a room.
For families, Amazon is offering an Echo Dot designed for kids, with Octopus and Penguin designs. This kids version keeps the same core Echo Dot features, including the smart home hub, AZ3 processing, microphones, and sensors. It also comes with one year of Amazon Kids+, which adds kid-focused content and experiences on top of the main Alexa features. The goal is to have a version of the Dot that fits better into a child’s room while still tying into the broader smart home setup.
Echo Studio with Home Camera Brings Vision to Alexa+
The Echo Studio with Home Camera keeps the same audio setup as the existing Echo Studio and adds a built-in camera. It features a high-excursion woofer, three full-range drivers, Dolby Atmos, a new Advanced Room Adaptation feature, and Adaptive Volume for stronger sound and room-aware playback. The new part is the camera on the front, which opens up both basic viewing and smarter Alexa+ features.
Using Live View in the Alexa app, people can check in on the room where the Echo Studio sits while they are away from home. Alexa+ can also see what is in front of the camera and respond to it. For example, it can explain the rules from a board game box placed in front of it or recognize a cereal box to help reorder. Amazon says that soon the Echo Studio with Home Camera will be able to pair with a compatible Fire TV device for video calls on the TV, turning the speaker and TV into a larger-screen calling setup. The device comes in Graphite, and Amazon is keeping the standard camera-free Echo Studio available for those who do not want a camera in their speaker.
Privacy Controls and How the Camera Works
Like all Echo devices, the Echo Studio with Home Camera has a dedicated button that turns off both the microphones and the camera when pressed. There is also a built-in LED that turns on whenever the device streams images or video to the cloud, giving a visual signal that the camera is actively sending content out.
For people who prefer audio-only smart speakers, Amazon continues to sell the Echo Studio without any camera. That gives buyers a direct choice between the higher-end smart speaker with or without visual features. Certain camera features, such as visual recognition, rely on Alexa+, which ties together voice and visual understanding for things like reading game rules or recognizing common household items.
What the New Echo Dot Hub Supports
The smart home hub inside the new Echo Dot is designed to connect to compatible devices that use Zigbee, Matter, or Thread. With these standards supported, the Dot can act as the main smart home controller for a wide range of gadgets that follow those protocols. People do not need a separate hub box to bring these devices online, since the capability is built directly into the Echo Dot.
This setup means someone can add many supported lights, plugs, sensors, or switches and have them controlled by voice or automation through Alexa. Since Zigbee, Matter, and Thread are all focused on smart home gear, the Echo Dot can connect straight to those products and manage them without extra hardware. For anyone starting or expanding a smart home, the new Dot is positioned as both the speaker and the central connection point for many popular device types.
