Ring has announced a new feature called Video Descriptions, which uses generative artificial intelligence to improve home security. The company has been focused on developing products for safer neighborhoods for over ten years, starting with the original video doorbell. Over time, Ring added products like the Floodlight Camera and the Neighbors app. Now, Ring is using advancements in AI to change how its security products work.
Video Descriptions is the first big step in this new direction. This feature gives short text summaries of what your Ring cameras and doorbells see. The goal is to help people quickly know if something important is happening at home by just glancing at their phones. For example, instead of just getting a generic alert, users might see a message like “A person is walking up the steps with a black dog” or “Two people are peering into a white car in the driveway.” This helps people decide if they need to take action or if the activity is just part of daily life.
The technology behind Video Descriptions focuses on describing only the main subject that triggered the alert and what that subject is doing. These summaries are kept short on purpose, so users can see at a glance if there is something that needs attention. Ring says that this approach will make notifications more helpful and less confusing, since users will get more useful information in less time.
Ring also plans to use AI to combine multiple motion alerts around a house into one message, making it easier to follow what is happening without getting flooded with separate alerts. In the future, Ring will add custom anomaly alerts that learn the usual patterns of a home and only send notifications when something unusual happens. This can help cut down on false alarms and make it easier for people to spot real problems.
The Video Descriptions feature is currently rolling out in beta for Ring Home Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada, in English only. It works with all current Ring doorbells and cameras, so both new and existing customers can use it if they have the right subscription plan. The feature is enabled through the Ring app.
Ring says it will continue working on new features that use AI to help protect homes and neighborhoods. The company sees a lot of potential in using this technology to improve the experience for people who use its products. More updates and features are expected in the future as Ring continues to work in this direction.
