Honeywell Home ElitePRO, X7S and X8S owners are set to get Apple Home’s Adaptive Temperature and Clean Energy Guidance features, which work with Apple’s new HomeView smart home hub, without swapping out any hardware. Resideo Technologies announced that a planned software update in the first quarter of 2027 will let its existing Honeywell Home ElitePRO, X7S and X8S thermostats work with Apple’s Adaptive Temperature Control and Clean Energy Guidance features through the Home app. The update is planned and not yet available.
Resideo says owners of compatible thermostats will get the new features without replacing their existing devices or requiring additional professional installation. On the Apple side, the features run through the Home app and need a home hub such as an Apple TV, HomePod or HomeView, plus a compatible Matter thermostat.
How Adaptive Temperature Control is expected to work
Apple describes Adaptive Temperature Control as a smarter way to manage heating and cooling by using temperature ranges and different household states instead of a single static set point. In the iPhone User Guide, Apple says the Home app can use a compatible Matter thermostat to hold a custom range for At Home, Night, Away and Extended Away, letting the system adjust within that band instead of constantly targeting one exact temperature. The goal is to keep the home comfortable while giving some flexibility for energy use and different daily patterns.
Within Adaptive Temperature, Apple lists several options that go beyond a normal thermostat schedule. A Switch Thermostat Modes setting can move the thermostat between Heat, Cool, Auto and Off based on the user’s preferred temperature ranges. With Occupancy Detection, the system can use compatible occupancy sensors to adjust the temperature based on room occupancy. Predict Arrival taps into daily routines using signals such as Apple Maps and Calendar to precondition the home back to the At Home range, so the house reaches a comfortable temperature closer to when people actually show up. Apple says these actions can also log to Activity History inside the Home app, so users can see what the system has done over time.
Clean Energy Guidance and small thermostat shifts
Apple’s Clean Energy Guidance feature is aimed at timing heating and cooling around cleaner power on the grid, using small adjustments in thermostat settings. According to the iPhone User Guide, people can enable a setting called Optimize for Clean Energy in the thermostat’s section of the Home app. When that toggle is on, the Home app can adjust the thermostat by small amounts to help reduce electricity usage during times when energy sources are less clean.
Apple says that in the contiguous U.S., Clean Energy Guidance can shift heating and cooling to cleaner, lower-cost periods for users with a compatible utility plan. Resideo has not announced any extra hardware, subscription or fee for these features on the ElitePRO, X7S and X8S.
Current Honeywell Home smart thermostat features
The ElitePRO, X7S and X8S are part of Resideo’s latest generation of Honeywell Home smart thermostats. Resideo says these models are Matter certified and can work with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Home Assistant and Samsung SmartThings. They can also be managed through the Resideo Connect app without needing a separate smart home hub, which gives users a direct path to control and scheduling even if they do not use a broader smart home system.
On the hardware side, Resideo describes these thermostats as having customizable touchscreens up to five inches. They can stream live video from compatible Ring and First Alert doorbells. The devices support radar-based occupancy detection and multiple room sensors, which can help manage comfort across several rooms instead of only at the thermostat’s location. For people concerned about indoor conditions beyond temperature, these models can work with indoor air quality add-ons, and they support Resideo’s Redlink wireless technology for communication with other system components.
Resideo notes that a professional HVAC contractor can help homeowners select and configure a Honeywell Home smart thermostat that works with their heating equipment.
What you need
To use Adaptive Temperature Control and Clean Energy Guidance on a Honeywell Home thermostat after the update arrives, you will need one of three specific models. Resideo lists the Honeywell Home ElitePRO, X7S and X8S as the thermostats that are planned to receive the software update. You will also need the Apple Home app and a home hub such as an Apple TV, HomePod or HomeView. Clean Energy Guidance is also limited to compatible utility plans in the contiguous U.S.
Resideo has not given a specific day or month for the first-quarter 2027 rollout. Until then, the three thermostats keep their current features and existing Apple Home support.
