TP-Link has announced a new firmware update that brings Matter energy monitoring to its supported smart devices. This update adds standardized energy tracking features, as set out in the Matter 1.3 specification, to certain TP-Link devices. Matter is a smart home standard that aims to make devices from different brands work together without issues. With this update, users can now see both real-time and past energy use data from their devices, which can help them manage how much power they are using at home.

The first device to get this new feature is the Tapo P110M. To use Matter energy monitoring, users need to make sure both the Tapo P110M device and its Hub have the latest firmware installed. Right now, only the SmartThings and Home Assistant apps can read and display the energy data from these devices. TP-Link says that, over time, more of its Matter-certified devices with energy monitoring will get this update through future firmware releases.

TP-Link decided to add this feature now because the smart home market is starting to support Matter energy monitoring more widely. Matter 1.3, released in May 2024, included energy monitoring as a standard, but at first, most major smart home platforms did not support it. This could have caused problems for users if they tried to use energy monitoring before all the needed features were ready in the apps they use. TP-Link waited until there was enough support, especially from major apps like Samsung SmartThings, before turning on the feature for its users.

The company also points out its approach to testing and reliability. TP-Link has strict checks in place to make sure its devices work correctly with other brands and platforms. They only enable new features when they are sure that most users will get a good experience. TP-Link is also working with other smart home platform companies to help them finish adding Matter energy monitoring support to their own systems. The goal is that users will be able to use energy monitoring across many different apps and devices without any trouble.

TP-Link is a global company that sells networking products, smart home devices, and related services in more than 170 countries. The company’s products cover consumer and business networking, electronics, security, software, and cloud services. With this new update, TP-Link continues to add new features to its smart home devices, focusing on making them work well with different brands and platforms.
