IKEA has announced the launch of a new smart home range that includes 21 products, all designed to work with Matter, which is the main standard for smart home devices right now. These new items focus on lighting, sensors, and control products. IKEA says the new range is meant to make smart home technology simpler to use and less expensive, so more people can get started with it. This launch includes both brand-new products and updates to some of IKEA’s current smart home items, all built so they work with other brands that support Matter.
The new smart home range is the result of several years of development and testing inside real homes. During this time, IKEA says it has learned more about what people want from smart home products. The new products are aimed at making it easier for people to build a smart home in their own way, using devices from many different brands if they want. David Granath, a range manager at IKEA of Sweden, said that in the past smart home technology was either hard to use or cost too much for a lot of people. IKEA’s new products are meant to change that by being simple and affordable.
The updated range covers three main types of smart home products. For lighting, IKEA’s new KAJPLATS line of smart bulbs comes in eleven different versions, with various shapes, sizes, brightness levels, and styles. There are bulbs that let you choose between color options and white light, and all can be dimmed. The new bulbs can do more than IKEA’s older smart bulbs, including offering a wider range of colors and light levels. These bulbs are made to fit common lamp bases like E27, E14, and GU10, and there are also clear-glass decorative bulbs.
The second group of products is smart sensors. IKEA has created five new sensors for different uses. There is a motion sensor called MYGGSPRAY that works both indoors and outdoors to turn lights on automatically. A door and window sensor called MYGGBETT can tell if something is opened or closed and can send notifications to your phone. TIMMERFLOTTE is a temperature and humidity sensor that shows the climate inside your home. The ALPSTUGA air quality sensor measures things like carbon dioxide and fine particles and can work with IKEA air purifiers. KLIPPBOK is a water leakage sensor that will sound an alarm and can send a notification if it detects a leak. These sensors are designed to help with health, comfort, and damage prevention.
The third type of product in the launch is for control. The BILRESA remote controls come in two main types: one with two buttons and another with a scroll wheel. These are meant to let you turn lights on or off, dim them, change their color, or trigger preset scenes. There are also kits with colorful remotes. The GRILLPLATS smart plug can turn regular lamps and small appliances into smart devices that you can control remotely. You can also use the plug to track how much energy something uses, and it can be paired with a remote or motion sensor.
To connect and control all these products, you need a smart home hub. IKEA’s own hub is called DIRIGERA, but you can also use a hub from another brand, as long as it supports Matter. DIRIGERA can control IKEA’s smart products and many other brands that use Matter. It can also act as a bridge, so older IKEA smart home items that do not support Matter can still work with new platforms.
IKEA says this is just the first step, and there are plans to add more smart home products in the future. The goal is to keep making smart home technology that is easy to use and not expensive. IKEA says it wants its smart home products to have a clear purpose and to help with daily life at home. Sales start times and prices will be different depending on where you live, so IKEA recommends checking with your local store for more details.
