Abode is adding two new outdoor sensors to its smart home security lineup, aimed at covering the spots that indoor sensors usually miss. The company announced the Garage Tilt Sensor and the Outdoor Contact Sensor, both built to handle weather and meant for places like garage doors, gates, sheds, and side entrances. The goal is to extend security past the front door and help homeowners keep an eye on more of their property without complicated wiring or professional installation.
The Garage Tilt Sensor is designed for tilt-up and sectional overhead garage doors, which are one of the most common entry points for break-ins. Instead of tracking whether two pieces of plastic touch, like a standard contact sensor, it uses the angle of the door to tell if it is open or closed. Abode says the sensor reports the status of the garage door in real time, so users can check the Abode app and see at a glance if they left the door up. The sensor is also built to send alerts when the door opens or closes, so users can get a notification if someone accesses the garage unexpectedly.
The Outdoor Contact Sensor is meant for more general use on doors, gates, fences, sheds, or other access points exposed to the elements. It works like a typical door or window contact sensor, with two pieces that separate when the door or gate opens. What sets it apart is its outdoor rating and durable housing, which are designed to handle rain, dust, and temperature swings without constant failures or false alarms. This gives homeowners a way to bring smart monitoring to backyard gates, side-yard doors, or detached buildings that are usually left off the security system.
Both new devices are battery powered, so they do not need wiring or power outlets nearby. Abode is targeting do-it-yourself users, so installation is meant to be as simple as mounting the sensor with screws or adhesive and pairing it in the app. The sensors tie into Abode’s existing smart home security systems, meaning they can be included in arming modes, trigger alarms, and work with automation rules. Because they run on Abode’s platform, the new sensors also work with Apple Home (HomeKit), Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant, so they can fit into a wider smart home setup beyond the Abode app. That can include routines like turning on outdoor lights when a gate opens at night or sounding a siren if the garage door opens while the system is armed.
Abode is positioning these sensors for people who already have cameras or a main security kit but want better coverage of the “weak spots” around the house. A backyard gate that is always left unlocked, a side door to the garage, or a shed with tools and bikes can all be monitored in the same app as the front door and motion sensors. By extending monitoring outdoors, homeowners can get alerts earlier if someone is moving around on the property, not just after they reach the main doors or windows.
The company is also leaning on the fact that outdoor-rated gear has usually meant more cost, hardwired installation, or hiring a pro. By keeping the Garage Tilt Sensor and Outdoor Contact Sensor in the same DIY category as its indoor products, Abode is aiming these at renters and homeowners who want more coverage without a long-term contract or major changes to the property. For users already in the Abode ecosystem, the new sensors add more flexibility in how they secure different parts of the home, especially areas that were hard to cover with indoor-only gear.
